PostSubject: WWII AU?   Sun Mar 17, 2013 8:24 pm

Earlier in my Hetalia-foruming-years, I began a WWII thread where everyone was kind of reverted back to the 1940 era - long story short, it kind of blossomed. And, to tell you the truth, it was a ton of fun. So, I wanted to experiment and see what it would be like if we started an AU on this forum with the same idea - however, not a lot of trial and error has been put into this idea, though, so forgive the whole sporadicness of it. There really are a ton of questions you could ask that the answer I could give you would be, 'Well, I sure as hell don't know.' ^^" One thing that has been set into stone with this idea though, to make it a bit more flexible, is the fact that the characters would be allowed to choose whether they were Axis, Allies, or Neutral (perhaps that's the only conflicting factor with real history here...). However, if this option isn't necessarily liked, it can easily be changed. ...And yeah, that's really the only thing I've got so far. ._. Pathetic, I know.

Other than that, I thought it would be something pretty intriguing to try. And I would love to hear more opinions and ideas for this idea, so if you have any, please share~!

Hmm... an interesting idea, though history and war is a tricky thing. But I guess so long as respect was paid towards the not-so-glamorous side of war, and particularly WWII. Depending on how it goes, things could get ugly very very fast. Personally, I'm a little unsure about it.

This be using canon characters then, I'm guessing? What could possibly be done is, similar to the series, try and show character interaction without delving much into things like battle scenes, while keeping true to what might be happening at the time - even if not directly shown - and the results of it (for example, bombings, famines, economic challenges, general opinions of the people vs. the government ect.). Another thing to keep in mind would be what might happen if another character comes under the control of another. Would there be rules set for how that controlled character needs to be treated by the character controlling them? Also, what would dictate how the war would "end"?

Sorry for the questioning - I do otherwise think the idea is an interesting one~

Yeah...I have to put an unsure stamp on this too. My reason for being so unsure is that we do have loads of people here from different parts of the world...who aren't necessarily playing characters of their nationality either. And I'm not saying we're all immature or would do this, but as Lovi stated it can get pretty ugly pretty fast...especially if people mistake something or think of something as disrespectful to a certain culture or historical fact.

Also, history is written by the winners...so how we learn about WW2 (and thus decide to portray it) will differ greatly from someone else, so again, the potential to offend comes into play.

The other problem stems from, if there's not a war to be fought (or some conflict driving the AU), then what will happen in the AU? If it's just strictly the interactions of characters with other characters (who are thus portraying their cultures) at that time, then wouldn't we be essentially be re-creating Hetalia...or a caricature of Hetalia (which is a caricature of stereotypes)? I might just be thinking of this the wrong way of course, but I figured I'd throw that out there.

I'd say that any topic based on history is going to be a shaky one. However, there will be instances in which we can take the general gist of history and place it into an AU where the players can be more free. A good example of that right now is the Seven Seas AU...where although it is based on piracy, and many of our players have based their profiles off of or refer to actual pirating (sometimes indirectly as well), it is not necessarily focused on the European Golden Age of piracy.

Just my two cents ^^'

*points fingers at both* You've all got good points here - I'm especially going to stay strong with the getting-ugly-very-fast point. War most definitely is a very tricky thing - there certainly are very many aspects where things could go screwy. It would be very easy to hit some nerves for those from other countries if something wrong is said or done.

Yes, perhaps we should leave this topic alone for the time being. I've forgotten how sticky the business of playing with history can be, especially with such a topic as WWII. Thanks for shedding some light on the 19-year old head over here. ^^"

*huggles Veta and loves* We can always have at each other in other AUs, if we feel so inclined to fight each other *shot*

Also, another way I've seen people skirt the 'war is ugly issue' in some AUs is to form up the groups (e.g. Allies, Axis, etc.) or have the friends/enemies of WWII, but in a AU-appropriate way. For example, if in Seven Seas, the members we have of the Allies decided to all be one ship, or end up on one ship, then that would be fine AND a sort of indirect nod to WWII without stepping on potentially sensitive topics. That's just an example of course (and doesn't necessarily prevent things from getting sensitive), but it sometimes works out~

And again, we can always find a place to beat each other up (IC) in the AUs (which is usually why there's a place where there's nothing specific...or empty space with nothing specific living in it...just in case *shot again* XD)
